Trump Policies Shake China-to-U.S. Air Cargo Market in February

February data reveals a notable decline in China-to-U.S. air cargo demand, contrasting with growth in shipments to Europe. Combined tonnages from China and Hong Kong to the U.S. fell 10% year-over-year, while volumes to Europe increased by 4%, according to WorldACD Market Data. Spot rates also diverged, with China-to-U.S. rates averaging $3.80 per kilo—9% lower than last year—while shipments to Europe saw a 17% increase to $4.58 per kilo. The downturn in U.S.-bound shipments aligns with disruptions caused by a brief suspension of China's access to U.S. de minimis exemptions in early February, affecting e-commerce shippers.

Globally, total air cargo volumes rose 5% year-over-year, led by growth in Asia Pacific, Central & South America, and Europe, while Middle East & South Asia saw a 6% decline due to last year’s Red Sea freight crisis. Adjusted for Lunar New Year effects, global tonnages increased 3% for January and February combined. Average worldwide air cargo rates reached $2.32 per kilo, up 6% from last year, with Asia Pacific spot rates leading at a 15% year-over-year rise.

While it's too early to draw firm conclusions, the weaker China-to-U.S. market highlights the impact of shifting trade policies and regulatory changes, particularly for e-commerce shippers. Meanwhile, steady global growth suggests a resilient air cargo sector despite regional fluctuations.
